The Globe and Mail

I had a great time photographing six of my fellow countrymen for a recent feature in The Globe and Mail about Canadians Expats living and working in Silicon Valley.

(Yes, I am a Canuck.  Although I was born in Arizona I was lucky enough to grow up in British Columbia, Canada where I learned my good manners and appreciation of wide open spaces.  This is also why you might hear an "eh" slip out every once in a while when you're in my company.)

The individuals I met during this assignment were like most Canadians I know: unique, exceptionally nice and self-reliant.  From Chris Albinson, a Venture Capitalist who is helping fellow Canadian techie entrepreneurs get a leg up in Silicon Valley to the self proclaimed "Geek" Neil Fraser, who works at Google during the week and can be found kayaking the San Francisco Bay on the weekends, spending time with my fellow Canadians was a bit of a coming home for me and truly welcomed.

I shot these for Panera a little earlier this year and they go up in cafes early this September!  If you stop in to have a look make sure you try the Sierra Turkey sandwich (pictured below).  It's delicious.

 

Girls Who Rock!

Bay Area Girls Rock Camp (BAGRC) is a great non-profit organization in Oakland that empowers girls through music education, creation, and performance and serves a diverse community of girls in terms of race, socioeconomic background, sexual orientation and ability.  They were just finishing up the 2011 Summer Camp when they asked me to come in and take some photos of the bands.  Here are a just a few...

 

  

  

 

 

 

Alice Waters - A day in the life

I felt honored when The Wall Street Journal asked me to photograph Alice Waters, one of my idols and founders of the locavore movement. It was inspiring to see how she runs her business and all that she accomplishes in one day.  Below is the article that ran in the print version of the publication along with a few outtakes.

 

Feasting in Napa

I was recently hired by Private Clubs Magazine for what I consider to be a dream job.  They asked me to travel to wine country for four days to photograph a few gourmet restaurants in the region.  One of my favorite dishes was the French Toast Souffle at Hopper Creek Kitchen in Yountville.  It was like having dessert for breakfast!  Here's a little taste of the assignment.

 

 

Your Daily Veggies

I was thrilled to find out that my first assignment for The Daily would have me traveling to Napa to photograph the vegetarian restaurant Ubuntu whose chef, Aaron London, is a finalist for the James Beard Foundation's "Rising Star Chef" Award for 2011.  The restaurant has a "Skin to Seed" philosophy which entails that they use every part of the vegetable, all of which are grown in the restaurant’s nearby bio-dynamic garden.  Here are some outtakes from the shoot.

 

  

Buen Apetito!

Sometimes I really love my job.  One of the great perks of being a food photographer is that I often get a chance to taste some amazing food and wine.  I recently photographed Bocadillos, Contigo and Gitane, three Spanish restaurants in San Francisco, as part of an assignment for Spain Gourmetour's image library. All I can say is delicioso!

I recently completed an assignment for the web version of Spain Gourmetour Magazine and besides photographing eleven Spanish restaurants in five days, I also had the opportunity to capture these amazing Flamenco dancers in action.  They perform every Sunday night at Thirsty Bear Brewing Company.  Get there early to get a good seat!

Feels Like Summer

In the midst of this cold winter I thought it might be nice to remember what summer feels like.  Here are few images from Breitenbush Hot Springs just outside of Salem, Oregon.  With it's rejuvenating hot springs, daily organic meals and cozy accommodations, it's a wonderful place to spend some down time.
